TIME MANAGEMENT

The concept of time management must have been as old as time itself. The cavemen must have left their caves at sunset in order to catch the wild beasts while they were fast asleep. The moon must have measured the lodging of the sun in the sky in other to know when to seek its ray.

The concept of time management isn’t about us increasing the amount of time we have but rather making the most of the equal amount of time that we all have been given.

While most people will use the fact that others have more time than them as an excuse for not achieving that which they have set out to do, achievers on the other hand use their limited time to create a sense of urgency to their various tasks and goals.

One thing we must understand is that our time is limited. We will only get 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day. And how we choose to spend this limited time we have been given; all depends on how we choose to use it.

Time wasted can never be regained. To think that time wasted cannot be regained we will be exploring ways in which we can manage our time better.

We will be exploring three strategies of time management.

1. URGENCY: This the most well-known concept of time management whereby people set up a deadline to what they want to do with their time. A sense of urgency helps us achieve things we have set out to do at the specific time we have allotted to it. It helps us to do in little time what could have taken a very long time.

The problem with this concept is that most times, people who create a sense of urgency to their task, end up handling so many tasks with a sense of urgency without actually being productive. They spend so much time rushing to finish tasks that don’t yield results. One ends up most times hurrying to accomplish tasks that don’t give one enough time for oneself. Time management should involve smooth transition of time with tasks in-between without much hurry.

2. IMPORTANCE: This is a concept that goes beyond urgency. This about focusing only on the important and productive task first even before spending time on the less important task. This helps one to not waste time on task that will yield no produce.

You can adopt this concept by creating a scale of preference of tasks that actually matter; of those when achieved, will give you more results for time spent on them. You can put aside tasks whose importance are limited. It might also mean hiring competent people to do a job for a fee so you can focus more on task that matter to you.

3. SIGNIFICANCE: This is the process of time management which involves doing only necessary tasks right now that will create more time for you in the future. This is the act of looking at the long-term implication of the actions we are taking right now.

It means performing tasks in the present that will create more time for you in the future. It might mean quitting your 9–5 job that doesn’t give you time in other to spend the next 5 years staring a business that can set you free for the rest of your life.

This various time management strategy have been tested to work although the third is the most productive, do well to apply what works best for you. As we begin the next few months of this year, I hope we all prioritize and make adjustments towards better management of our most limited resource TIME. Do have a prosperous year ahead.
